Apples and Antiques and Ale, Oh My!

Apple cider, apple pie, baked apples, applesauce, apple cake, poached apples - the list of things you can do with apples is endless! Honestly, one of our favorite ways to eat an apple is with no fuss whatsoever - just a slice of apple and a sliver of cheese or a dab of peanut butter! Or do nothing at all - biting into a fresh, crunchy, sweet apple is a delight! Michigan is the second highest apple-producing state in the entire country, second only to Washington. Favorable conditions this year have led to a bumper crop estimated to be around 32 million bushels (that’s about 1.3 million pounds!)! There are no fewer than one zillion recipes that feature apples, but if you’re looking to go beyond the apple-cheese suggestion above, we recommend simply poaching apples in syrup with whatever spices you prefer - cinnamon, vanilla, ginger, etc. If you’re feeling really fancy, a dollop of vanilla ice cream makes the perfect dessert! There is still plenty of time to pick your own apples in Michigan, so you can try all sorts of recipes (we’ve got more tried and true ones if you need some ideas!).

We’ve written before about Michigan’s incredible craft beers, and several of them have new beers just right for a fall evening. After a day of apple-picking, head on over to one of Ypsilanti’s excellent tap rooms to try some of the new Oktoberfest brews (Ypsi Alehouse has one, the Corner Brewery has one, and 734 Brewing has an apple wine!). Or we can set you up with a beer tasting here at The Newton of Ypsilanti, and you can enjoy a fall feast created by Chef Allison, with a fire crackling in the fireplace!

If you’re aiming for the perfect fall weekend, you might as well spend the next day antiquing! There are countless antiques shops here in Ypsilanti, and in the many nearby farm towns as well. You’re sure to find some treasures!

Come stay with us at the Newton of Ypsilanti, and we can help you have the perfect fall weekend - apples, antiques, and ale, along with plenty of other adventures and delicious food!
